A Poetry Series by Year 5G titled “In Our Hands”
Last term, students from Ms Kate’s class chose an object that was important to them, and shared their unique stories through poetry. The collection of images is a precious peek into the minds of children and what they hold special in their lives.
The Yellow Ball (image above)
When I hold
this yellow ball
I hear
the vibration
hitting the ground
I see
the arvo sky
forming into reddish orange
I smell
sweat running down my face
I try to eliminate
the try hards.
Words : Jack Lambert
My House Key
When I hold
this black key
I feel
my house
my family
me leaving to school
I hear
my family
laughing
my dog barking
I feel
the love
Words: Riko Hashizume
Squirrel
When I hold
this fluffy squirrel
I see
his cute face
I feel
not alone and safe
I hear
my friends say
“Where is squirrel?”
Words: Mia Damian-Vernet Su
Special Sound
When I hold this
kalimba
I hear
the melody
of the water falling sound
in the forest.
I smell
watery wood
I feel
cold, silver tough metal keys
Words: Ivan Hong
Special
When I hold
the horse chess piece
I feel
something magnetic
when I’m winning
my smile is wide
I hear
the gallop
Words: Demian Sukhorukov
Special Marble
When I hold
this transparent, stripy marble
I hear
my parent’s childhood stories
laughing in joy
I see
the old-fashioned way
of playing marbles
I feel
lucky.
Words: Moon Nguyen
This Dumb Chess Piece
When I hold
This black horse,
I see
the horse moving towards
the white king.
I feel
Like a king of the black chess.
I smell
The blood of the white soldiers.
I hear
A battle to the death
Of many chess soldiers.
W0rds: Bi Trần Đức Minh
Special
When I hold
This golden snake
I feel
the venom
coursing through my bones
The fangs
piercing through my tissue-like skin
I hear screaming
An ambulance
I see a slender object
Slithering through the grass
Chasing, devouring everything in its path.
Words: Luke Tran
Special
When I hold
My fluffy Stich
I feel
like I’m in the dark night
like in Stich’s eye
I hear
Lilo shouting “Stich”
as loud as she can
I see
Lilo surfing with her friend
As the wave comes forward her.
Words: Jiyu Yoon
Special
When I hold
my furry quokka stuffie
I feel
the fluffiness of her fur
I hear
my friend and I laughing with joy
I taste
the yummy snack inside my tummy
while holding it tight
I feel
special and happy
if I have quokka in my palm.
Words: Yu Min Kang
Seychelles
When I hold
this silver anchor
I see
my dad’s hotel
my friends.
When I feel
this silver anchor
I feel
the crashing waves.
I remember
Seychelles
Words: Tobias Oostenbrink
Special
When I hold
my soft moose
I see
the museum gift shop
I feel
the freezing, icy, Canadian air
It makes me feel
frozen.
