There’s a profound connection between Hoi An and Hoi An International School (HAIS), as our mission is to cultivate an inclusive learning environment, harmoniously intersecting local traditions with global perspectives, all while fostering a functional, eco-friendly, and sustainable learning environment. In our “Humans of HAIS” series, we are privileged to introduce Mr. Thuong, our beloved gardener who hails from Hoi An and has been with HAIS since its inception.

As you stroll through the peaceful campus of Hoi An International School, you can’t help but notice the stunning green landscape adorned with a diverse array of plant species. What many may not realise is that behind this natural beauty stands a beloved figure who has cared for these gardens for over six years. Known affectionately as “the greenkeeper”, Mr. Thuong has become a cornerstone of our school community, with his dedication woven into the very fabric of our educational journey.

We encountered Mr. Thuong in the school garden on a sunny day, deeply engrossed in tending to the lush greenery. Like many locals of Hoi An, he exudes a quiet humility and prefers to let his love for his homeland, his work, and each plant and chicken he nurtures speak for itself. However, when asked about his experience at our school, where cultures converge, Mr. Thuong opens up with warmth and enthusiasm, expressing his genuine happiness in being part of this vibrant community.

“As a local resident and part of the school staff, I take pride in fostering a welcoming environment for locals and expatriates alike,” Mr. Thuong shares warmly. “It’s heartening to see our school grow not just as a place of learning, but as a hub for cultural exchange and community spirit. With Hoi An gaining global recognition, I’m delighted to witness the growing appreciation for our town’s unique charm and the enriching experiences it offers to all who come here.“

Born and raised in the timeless charm of Hoi An ancient town, Mr. Thuong’s roots intertwine deeply with the local culture and environment. His profound connection to the land and its evolution over time enriches our appreciation for sustainability and stewardship. In his demeanor, Mr. Thuong exudes a quiet strength and an intimate bond with the land he diligently nurtures. Despite the mark of time on his face, they gleam with a sense of fulfillment and pride as he tends to his garden—a sanctuary where each plant embodies a story of his unwavering care and dedication.

Reflecting on the past six years at Hoi An International School, Mr. Thuong expresses, ‘I’ve had the privilege of being part of this community during a period of significant growth in our students and facilities.
