There’s More Than One Way to Be Brilliant | Academic and Personal Growth
A* matters. So does the moment a child walks onto a stage in front of 500 people, heart beating a little faster than usual, and realises they can do it. A strong Mathematics result matters. So does the first time a student dives into a swimming pool at a competition in another city. A place at the top of the class matters. So does finding the thing that makes you want to practise for another hour, stay after school, try again when you get it wrong, and come back the next day wanting to do better. We believe all of these things matter. At Hoi An International School, we are proud of our academic results. Our students have achieved strong Cambridge results across Primary, Lower Secondary, IGCSE and AS Level. In 2026, more than half of our IGCSE grades were A*, with 97% awarded A*-C and 94% A*-B. At AS Level, 63% of grades were A and 81% were A-B. These achievements matter. They reflect hard work, determination and the high academic expectations we set for our students. But they are not the only things we celebrate. Because when we think about a child’s education, we think about more than what happens when they sit down at a desk. We think about what happens when they step onto a stage, onto a football pitch, into a swimming pool, behind

We think about what happens when they step onto a stage, onto a football pitch, into a swimming pool, behind a microphone, into a rehearsal room, or into a team where they suddenly discover that they have something to contribute.
There is more than one way to thrive.
Not every child will be the student who puts their hand up first in class. Not every child will discover their confidence through an exam.
Some find it through music. Some through sport. Some through performing. Some through working with a team.
And sometimes, the child who is quiet in the classroom becomes completely different when they are doing something they love.
That is why opportunities beyond the classroom matter.
Our biannual musical brings together students from across the school and an audience of more than 500 people from the HAIS community. This school year, HAIS will present its third musical production, Encanto, following the success of Alice in Wonderland and Peter Pan.

Our Elite Band and Elite Dance Club give students the chance to take their interests further. Through swimming, volleyball, football and basketball, our students compete with other schools in Vietnam and internationally.
These are not simply activities to fill an afternoon. They are places where children can discover something about themselves.
I can do this.
I am good at this.
I love this.
I want to get better.
Sometimes, those discoveries are just as important as a grade.
Because personal development does not happen separately from academic development. The two can strengthen each other.
The confidence to speak in front of an audience can become the confidence to speak up in class. The discipline learned through sport can carry into study. The resilience developed through rehearsal can help when an exam does not go according to plan.
Learning to listen, collaborate and lead in a team matters too, especially as students eventually step into university, work and adult life.

We don’t want students to leave HAIS with only a list of results. We want them to leave knowing themselves a little better.
Knowing what they are good at, knowing what they enjoy.
Knowing how to work with others.
Knowing how to keep going.
And, perhaps most importantly, knowing that they have more than one way to shine. Because academic excellence is important. But so is discovering who you are beyond the results.
