Small Chats | The Power of Connection
At HAIS, we understand the significance of minor social exchanges and the opportunities they present. Just as haiku poetry can capture the essence of a story in just 17 syllables, small conversations and chats have the potential to make a profound impact on our students’ lives. While lengthy friendships and long-term teacher-pupil relationships are important, it is crucial to recognise the unique role that brief interactions play in our personal development. As a community, our existence is shaped by the accumulation of small interactions, and our personal growth depends on the presence of these consistent connections. Our HAIS Pastoral Care Programme, which occurs every Thursday morning, is a dedicated time to display our shared humanity and provide an open chat or meaningful conversation. Even in Homeroom each day, this is also a time to not just tick off registration, but to see how our students are coping academically or emotionally. The morning routine of handball or skipping in the courtyard also possess a valuable superpower: with all age groups playing together in the courtyard, as well as our Principal Brett at the gate and Learning Leads facilitating early morning interactions, there is the daily opportunity to extend a warm, gentle, and sympathetic ‘hello’. By checking in with our students and engaging in small conversations, we foster a sense of belonging, understanding, and support.
Whether it be small chats, elements of humour, or meaningful moments, we can never underestimate the small stuff in the broader scope of our lives.
