A Parent’s Guide to Year 1: What to Expect in the Cambridge Curriculum?
Year 1 marks a new chapter in your child’s learning journey, building on the curiosity and independence they nurtured in the Early Years. As the first stage of Primary within the Cambridge curriculum, it serves as a bridge into more structured learning while still keeping discovery and joy at the heart of every day. In Year 1, students are introduced to new subjects and experiences, sparking interests, building confidence, and laying the foundation for a lifelong love of learning. They will continue to strengthen their core skills in English and Maths, developing solid reading, writing, and number skills that support learning across all subjects. These essential skills empower children to communicate effectively, solve problems with confidence, and think in creative, innovative ways. We support students as they begin to engage with longer tasks, helping them develop concentration and focus. They learn to take responsibility for their work and keep trying, even when challenges arise. Each subject gives them a chance to learn something new: English: Reading and writing activities help students express themselves and build confidence with words. Maths: Number work, patterns, and problem-solving encourage logical thinking and curiosity about how things fit together.

- English: Reading and writing activities help students express themselves and build confidence with words.
- Maths: Number work, patterns, and problem-solving encourage logical thinking and curiosity about how things fit together.
- Global Perspectives: Students explore themselves, their community, and the wider world through discussions and activities.
- Science: Hands-on experiments help children notice, question, and understand how the world works.
- Digital Literacy: Students learn to use technology safely and creatively to support their learning.

At HAIS, Year 1 students also enjoy specialist lessons in Music, Art, Library, Drama, and PE, showing our focus on developing the whole child – creativity, physical skills, and confidence alongside academic learning.

Throughout the year, our pastoral program is woven through everything we do. We encourage students to be curious, to enjoy learning, and to embrace challenges. Most importantly, we help them find their passion and realise their dreams, nurturing their confidence, independence, and love of learning every step of the way. Year 1 isn’t just about knowledge – it’s about growing into a curious, resilient, and joyful learner.
