“Thoughtful, passionate, and creative”, that’s how we describe our beloved drama teacher, Ms Jennifer. She infuses every lesson with richness, excitement, and originality, bringing her passions to the classroom.

Before joining us, she taught English and Drama at international schools in Ho Chi Minh City for 11 years and was actively involved with the Saigon Players, a renowned community theatre group.

Ms Jennifer recalls, “In my senior year of high school, I was torn between pursuing Mass Communications, Education, or Theatre Arts. Although my mother discouraged me from auditioning for a theatre arts programme far from home, I eventually found a way to combine my love for Drama with teaching. I completed my master’s degree in Drama Education and Theatre Arts and have since directed and produced numerous school shows.”
Stepping into her classroom, you would be amazed by her creativity. Each year, she decorates the room with a new theme that engages every student. Her caring nature also shines through as she personally prepares birthday cakes for each student in her class.
What is the first impression of Ms Jennifer? It’s definitely her voice.
Naturally possessing an “opera voice,” her presence makes each lesson an immersive experience akin to attending an opera performance. With 25 years as an educator and theatre-maker, she is enthusiastic about the performing arts and eager to introduce students to the wonders of theatre.

When asked how she maintains her passion in every lesson, she shared, “Although my mother initially pushed me towards teaching because it was the more affordable option, I discovered a true passion for education during my time at Philippine Normal University. It was there that I encountered inspiring professors, the lifelong educator-learners who were intelligent, dignified, professional, prepared, punctual, and impartial, and who did nothing but teach from the moment they entered the door until the bell rang; professors who knew their students very well and were very supportive of them. The educator I looked up to as my best professor and mentor taught me and my other English major classmates Literature. She had us spellbound every moment of her class. Everything about her—her bearing, her voice, her intellect, her sense of humour, her way of talking, storytelling, and critical analysis—gripped me and made me want to listen and discuss with her. I actively participated in class discussions and in creative literary appreciation and enrichment activities, which included play productions, which, of course, thrilled me to no end. (I was always the class director during these performances) I told myself I would strive to be like her when it was my time to teach.”

Ms Jennifer’s impressive portfolio includes directing productions at various educational levels. She has led memorable school shows such as Clara and the Nutcracker, Beauty and the Beast, The Snow Queen, Moana, Paddington’s Winter Adventure, The Sound of Music, Hairspray, Little Shop of Horrors, The Lion King Jr., Alice in Wonderland, and Encanto.
“At HAIS, every moment in the Black Box or on stage is filled with purpose and excitement,” she says. “I am more inspired than ever to bring the magic of drama to students. This year, as we prepare for our annual school production, you can expect the same energy, commitment, and creativity. And when the curtains close on this show, I will be on my feet proudly applauding each member of the cast.”
In addition to teaching and directing, Ms Jennifer has conducted workshops in acting, directing, playwriting, stage management, Commedia dell’arte, mime, and improv. She has trained students for public speaking and monologue competitions, judged short film competitions and talent shows, and explored various forms of performance art, including dance and choreography.
She casually mentioned her passion for dragon boat racing and her desire to join a rowing crew, recalling her experiences racing in Manila.
As she marks her 25th year as an educator, Ms Jennifer’s passion remains as vibrant as ever. We continue to witness her enthusiasm and creativity in every lesson she teaches. Ms Jennifer, words cannot fully capture the depth of your impact and dedication. We are incredibly grateful for all that you do.
